Prior employment as a custodian at Johns Hopkins Hospital before entering JH’s Wilmer Eye Institute ophthalmologist assistant training. She reported making approximately $9/hr as a custodian with a wage increase to $14/hr as an ophthalmologist assistant. Coaching helped to identify and directly deal with personal issues that had been hindering her since childhood, which was that she had difficulty comprehending written text. This disability had caused much anxiety because she had previously failed comprehensive exams in other career ventures and she initially exhibited a defeatist attitude with the possibility of the same outcome happening to her again. The written comprehension disability also made her intimated to work with doctors because she did not want to feel inferior, as well as fear of misspelling a patient’s prescription in the computer that would cause harm because of her mistake.

She had to pass the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) examination, a comprehensive written exam in order to get certification which failing would remove her from the program. Being coached through this fear helped her to build the confidence to have a conversation with her supervisor, which then led to her being able to use the American Disabilities Act to remove the time Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) examination exam portion from a mandatory timed skills test. Coachee also learned how to work through differences dealing with direct supervisor and how to best manage workplace conflict.

She purchased a home that she was able to maintain because of increase in income. Passed Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) examination exam on September 10, 2014. Coaching services lasted from April 2013 thru June 2014.
